How we help Keswick Hospital
The Friends of Keswick Hospital charity, established in 1965, raises and distributes funds to provide amenities for the patients and staff of the Mary Hewetson Hospital, Keswick. We are volunteers, hospital staff (past and present) and members of the local community. When the hospital was threatened with closure in 2007, our trustees played a key role in saving it. In 2019 we provided £200k of funding towards a major hospital ward extension which provided four new in-patient beds. Here are some other items that we have funded more recently.
A simple weight set (£100) for the physiotherapy department.
A portable bladder scanner (£4,700) for general ward use.
A heated food trolley (£800) for the catering department.

About Keswick Hospital
The Mary Hewetson Hospital, Keswick opened in 1892 following the generous donation of a farm and land by Henry Hewetson, a prosperous ex-Keswickian philanthropist, who wished the hospital to be ‘a memorial of the beneficent nature and life’ of his sister, Mary. Extended and improved over the years, and now managed by North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Trust, the hospital is a vital resource for the people of Keswick and the surrounding area, providing sixteen in-patient beds, an urgent treatment centre, physiotherapy and occupational therapy services, etc. Patients are admitted from all over north Cumbria, whilst its urgent treatment centre provides services for local people and the many thousands of visitors to the World Heritage Site that is the Lake District National Park.
